Ride the Logger

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad runs authentic, historic Shay steam locomotives and Jenny Railcars on a four-mile narrated round trip into the Sierra National Forest. The conductor shares stories from the days when the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company worked the same roadbed. You can ride in an open-air log car or a covered passenger car, and well-behaved dogs are welcome on board.

After the train returns to the station, there's time to have lunch in the pines, pan for gold in the authentic sluice boxes, tour the Thornberry Museum (free admission), and browse the Station Gift Shop. Cab rides and engine house tours can be arranged for serious train fans.

In the evening, the Moonlight Special adds a BBQ dinner, campfire songs, and a steam train ride back to the station under the stars. It's a reliable family favorite and worth planning a night around.

The railroad holds the largest narrow-gauge Shay locomotive ever built. The Number 10 and Number 15 were the first and last Shay locomotives to leave the West Side Lumber Company, and both are still in service. The railroad is located at 56001 Highway 41, Fish Camp.
